Run Firefox OS on PC using Firefox OS Simulator
Mozilla is developing a new open source operating system called Mozilla Firefox OS for mobile phones and tablets. It can be the next big thing in the mobile industry which is currently dominated by mostly Android and Apple iOS. First mobile devices powered by this brand new operating system will be released later this year. This new HTML 5 based operating system was first announced at Mobile World Congress, 2013. Today Mozilla released Firefox OS Simulator for public. You can run and experience the new mobile operating system right from your computer without using mobile phone. If you are a developer you can test your apps in Firefox OS Environment. This Firefox OS Simulator will run on all computers, Windows, Linux and Mac. We already know how to run Android on computer, it will be interesting to run Firefox OS on computer as well. Are you excited to test drive a new mobile platform? Let’s start!
How to install Firefox OS Simulator on PC?
Firefox OS Simulator is not standalone software like BlueStack; instead it is a browser addon which runs inside Firefox browser. To install Firefox OS Simulator on computer, first navigate to this link below and install the addon the browser.
Install Firefox OS Simulator
Firefox OS Simulator will only work on Mozilla Firefox browser. The size of Firefox OS Simulator addon is quite large; it is around 50 MB. It will take some time to download and install. You may get ‘Unresponsive Script’ error dialog during installation, click on the ‘Continue’ button.
Once the installation is complete, navigate to Tools> Web Developer> Firefox OS Simulator and start the Firefox OS Simulator Dashboard. On the left side you will see a button to run the simulator.
Firefox OS looks a mixture of Android and Apple iOS with Nokia Symbian Anna styled icons. There is no dedicated app drawer, you have to swipe left and right to get access to all installed apps. It has a notification panel quite similar Android. You need to swipe from top to bottom access it. On the notification panel it has some quick toggle buttons of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Flight Mode etc.
Firefox operating system comes with some basic set of application like Calender, Clock, E-Mail, Music and Video player. There are some system apps like Camera, Gallery, FM Radio, Browser, Messaging etc.
The Marketplace is fully functional, you can browse and install apps from there. Camera and FM Radio don’t work for obvious reasons. The internet browser works well. Music player can identify computer’s music files but it was unable to play them.
The phone dialer is simple and looks similar to Android.
Firefox OS is neat and looks promising. It can become a popular platform if it starts getting strong support from manufacturers and developers.
